Note only Columbia has the black glove/chine. In 1985, the black SILTS pod was added to the rudder tip.

Note the Umbilical doors in this belly view. A "T" latch holds them flush against the orbiter until after ET sep, when the doors close and latch shut.

In the early 1990's, the orbiters' vertical tails were modified to house and deploy a drag chute on landing.

Endeavour had it built-in from the start. Not known which orbiter these two photos are from.

T-0 Umbilical Plates

Aft Compartment of orbiters have T-0 umbilical connections on the sides. These carry Liquid Hydrogen and Liquid Oxygen to load the ET, as well as various other connections from the pad to the shuttle.

They stay connected until liftoff, thus the "T-0" name.

NOTE: When orbiters such as Atlantis seen at Phil Broad's site have been overhauled in California, the OMS pods and forward RSC modules are removed at KSC and replaced with dummies for the flight out and back.

If you look carefullly you will see the forward RSC module and OMS pods are too "clean" and simple.
