Jay Apt uses SAREX II on OV-105's forward flight deck (during mission)

Photos of STS-47, which launched September 12, 1992, and landed September 20. It was Orbiter Endeavour's second mission.

This flight was of special note for two reasons.

One, because it was longtime NAR member and former NAR trustee Jay Apt's second mission.

Two, that the launch date was almost perfectly timed for many people arriving for the 1992 WSMC in Melbourne, Florida, including George.

So, this is the mission that George has made a 1/72 flying model of.

All photos on this page document that mission. Many photos are from 8 x 10's that have been scanned. Some 8 x 10's courtesy of KSC Public Affairs Office, some purchased. Some from the web (either as Jpegs or I.D.'ed for purchased pics), and some from personal contacts.

Nearly all the KSC PAO photos were surprises, not found on the web.
Some of the scanned photos are shown enlarged & cropped to show details

There are also two nice stack photos of Endeavour STS-49, in the Endeavour non-STS-47 folder.

While there are always some detail differences between flights, even using the same orbiter and close timeframe, those two photos are useful as long as one keeps that in mind.

Due to a scheduling quirk, STS-49 was actually Endeavour's first mission. That's why it's tiles look so fresh. STS-47 was Endeavour's 2nd flight.

Close-up version - Rare to see anything of the -Z "far side" of an ET.
Mission Specialist Mamoru Mohri
Close-up version - "Far side" view of the left, with SRB & Intertank detail.

A modeler who works at KSC (and prefers to be semi-anonymous) provided these Jpegs of detail photos taken by the ice inspection team shortly before STS-47's launch.

The Ice Inspection Team checks over the shuttle shortly before launch to see that nothing is wrong. Not just ice but anything. They also document what they see by taking photographs

This is the -Z side,

Closer view, better detail visible of ET aft dome, struts, & SRB attach rings. Also the "manhole covers" used for construction access inside the ET Hydrogen tank before being welded shut.
