STS-102 SRB Sea Recovery

Back to Main WSMC CD

Some neat photos showing landing and nozzle plug operation on one SRBfrom the STS-102 mission.

Divers place a special plug into the nozzle of the SRB so that itcan be pumped with air to float horizontally like a log. Then it canbe towed back to KSC.The extendedportion of the nozzle separatesbefore splashdown, by explosive charge, that is why it is not seen inthe underwater photos.

For more photos of an SRB coming down, and one being towed, seethe MSFC photos.
